So, my sister just got... elected? chosen? railroaded? Whatever, she's now captain of her derby team. Any suggestions on coaching-type books that I might get her for Christmas?

Thanks :)

Right now, I'm finishing up the last of the quality control checks; in a couple of hours (at most), I'll be done, and the project will be officially over. Kind of sad, really.

Oh well, onward and upward, right?

Dumb with a side of crazy...

Back in July, a Major in the US Army Reserve sued to block his orders that would send him to Afganistan, on the basis that they were invalid because Barack Obama, not being a natural born citizen, was ineligible to be President and Commander-in-Chief. The Army recinded the orders, and the Birthers rejoiced; finally, the government admits it! Of course, it was a matter of nanoseconds before the Army press release clarified that Major Cook had volunteered to go to Afganistan, and the orders had been recinded because a volunteer can withdraw his... volunteer-ness?... at any time before deployment.

In August, Major Cook's lawyer, the unfortunately named Orly Taitz (dentist-lawyer-realtor to the stars!) released the President's "real" birth certificate, which was quickly shot down as a fake. Undeterred (and without learning from her mistakes), she tried it again in September, with the same results.

So what happens now? Does she slink off into some corner to baste in her own crazy? Of course not. She keeps filing cases! And when they get thrown out as frivolous (and with a reprimand and warning about sanctions if she keeps it up), she perfectly understandably compares herself to Nelson Mandela and calls for the judge to be tried for treason.

Thank you for being such a positive reflection on my profession.

To 4 c. chicken broth, add 3 red potatoes (cubed), zest and juice of 1 lemon, 4 cloves garlic (chopped), rosemary and sage to taste (generally 1/4 - 1/2 tsp each). Bring to boil, then reduce to simmer. Cube 2 chicken breasts, add to broth with 1/2# orzo. Simmer 8-10 minutes, until chicken is cooked through and orzo is soft. Makes approx 4 servings.

Tomorrow will be my first "normal" day of work this week:

Monday - Thought I had work, came in, found out I did not.
Tuesday - Slept late, missed the call saying there was work, but got the call for the second phase. Had to skip out on lunch with Meddy to get to south of the Tech Center; was there until 9:30pm :(
Wednesday - Spent 10 hours in a basement on the very southern edge of the Denver Metro.
Today - Didn't know if there was work, sent an email at 7:30, got the reply at 8:30, in by 9:30. Want to stay until about 6-ish to round out my schedule, but can do some of this from home so may exercise that option.
Tomorrow - Who knows? Probably in by 8, out by 5.

Advice for my squires...

Although anyone who finds it valuable may take it.

Carry your own water. Don't carry anyone else's, and don't let anyone else carry yours.
You are responsible for your own actions, and the consequences that flow from them. You are not responsible for anyone else's, and you cannot let others be responsible for you.

You are not who other people think you are.
While it is true that other people may be able to give you insight into who you are, they cannot tell you who you are. You need to discover yourself, and that takes time and introspection.

You are probably not who you think you are
You are young, and youth has a protean nature; you are constantly changing, and you're not yet set in the mold. You are a different person now than you were a year ago, six months ago, or even last month. Even if you think you know who you are, you'll probably be different this time next year. That's perfectly okay.

To thine own self be true
At the end of the day, people will judge you and form an opinion of you based on your actions. You can spend your life trying to please those around you, but that leads to a hollow life. You have to make decisions that you can live with, and sometimes that means doing things that are unpopular with your friends.

Learn from your mistakes, and the mistakes of others
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Don't make the same mistake over and over again; learn from your experiences, and from the experiences of those around you.

We live in a subjective world
Some things are objective, like the distance measured by 1 inch. Our world, though, is subjective, because everything is filtered through our senses and past experiences, meaning that everything is unique. Specifically, this means that there is no such thing as "one size fits all" advice; everything must be analyzed and fit into your own personal frame of reference. That includes this advice :)

Actions speak louder than words
This is a warning, both about yourself and other people. Some people think that they have everything figured out, and they are usually wrong to some extent or another. When someone's actions don't jive with their professed position or statements, the actions usually tell the truth.
